UK Dementia Congress

01-03 Nov 11 UK Dementia Congress

The largest dementia-focused event in the UK will take place in Liverpool this autumn

The 6th UK Dementia Congress will be held on 1-3 November at the BT Convention Centre, Liverpool. It offers an exciting mix of plenary sessions, parallel sessions, workshops and posters as well as early bird and lunchtime special interest sessions. There will also be a dedicated Alzheimer's Society stream.

This year’s Congress will address the challenge of improving services in the context of structural changes, including GP commissioning, and financial constraints. Presentations will demonstrate examples of good practice in these areas and in all other areas of care and support for people with dementia and carers, in the community and in care homes. There will be many opportunities for discussion and consultation with experts in interactive sessions. Congress will get off to a flying start on the opening evening with the popular Congress debate, keeping up the tradition of discussing lively and controversial issues.

There will be a strong emphasis on quality of life for people with dementia both living in the community and in care homes, involvement of people with dementia and carers in planning and developing services, and support for their family carers and front-line care staff. Design and environment, palliative care and end-of-life support, responding to distressed behaviour, purposeful occupation, the arts and creative activities will all be strong themes.

This year’s Congress will address meeting the challenge of improving services in the context of change and financial constraints, issues relating to People with dementia and carers. The main Congress will open with members of the Alzheimer’s Society Living with Dementia programme and Uniting Carers for Dementia. People with dementia and carers will be closely involved as contributors throughout the whole event.

This year’s event will feature a stimulating mix of national and international keynote speakers including: Professor David Ames (University of Melbourne, Australia); Simon Williams (Dementia Lead, Association of Directors of Adult Social Services); Angela Rippon OBE (Alzheimer's Society Ambassador - tbc, filming schedules permitting). This year’s Tom Kitwood Memorial Lecture will be given by Dr Pia Kontos, University of Toronto, Canada.
